  1. Thank you for the kind words, but let’s set the record straight. The honour is ours! Let me (David) say a few words. Hopefully, I will not sound overly pompous. /1 @_nickjob/1196729408960303104

More than ten years ago, Nick gave me some advice and inspiration for my first, and admittedly clumsy, type design attempt (google typeface Codan for a good laugh). Although a brief interaction, it shows that I am the student here and Nick is the teacher. /2

When he approached us with the idea of publishing a typeface with us, I was worried as I tend to have a strong art-direction and my senior might not care for that. Are we to expect ego-fuelled battles about nomenclature, position of nodes, distribution contract, or royalties? /3

None of that happened! Nick has been thorough in places where the job gets utterly boring; where other designers wash their hands with either “do your job, Rosetta” or “no one is going to see that”. It was a joy to work with someone so professional and patient. /4

Obviously, he stood his ground on aesthetic decisions in Adelphi, but he was never stubborn. He was open minded to play with variable fonts or when we pushed him to carefully review Cyrillic and Greek he considered done. All of that with a very gentlemanly manner. /5

So far, I have had several opportunities to work, as colleagues, with former mentors or teachers and only a few faired so well. Mind you, it is not an easy thing to pull off. Think about it… /6

You were a mentor, a senior, you knew almost everything compared to your students. You were an authority. To give it all up and let your mentees guide you for once is a hard lesson in humility. Anyone who manages that has my biggest respect! 🙏 /7

p.s. He did make us rework the contract a little! 😂
